Understanding Balance Disorders
Balance disorders cause a feeling of unsteadiness, dizziness, or vertigo. They can result from inner ear problems (vestibular disorders like BPPV), neurological conditions, medication side effects, or age-related decline. Falls due to poor balance are a leading cause of injury and hospitalisation among older adults in India.
Vestibular and Balance Rehabilitation
- Vestibular rehabilitation: Specific exercises for conditions like BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), including the Epley manoeuvre and habituation exercises.
- Static and dynamic balance: Progressive exercises that challenge balance in standing, during movement, and on different surfaces.
- Gait training: Improving walking patterns, confidence during turns, and navigating obstacles.
- Strengthening: Lower-limb and core strengthening to provide a stable base of support.
- Dual-task training: Practising balance while performing cognitive tasks mirrors real-life demands and improves functional balance.
Home-Based Balance Rehabilitation
Balance challenges are most dangerous in the home โ bathrooms, stairs, and uneven floors are common fall sites. Home-based physiotherapy allows your PhysioWay therapist to train you in the exact environment where falls are most likely to occur. We assess your home for hazards, practise safe navigation of your specific staircase and bathroom, and build a graded exercise programme that progressively challenges your balance system.
